Working From Home on a Computer Doesn’t Have to Be a Pain in the Neck

Working From Home on a Computer Doesn’t Have to Be a Pain in the Neck

Working on a computer for many hours a day can be painful. In the long run, it can cause serious health problems. In order to avoid the most common computer-induced health conditions such as Musculoskeletal problems and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, people are looking for solutions such as ergonomic computer desks and chairs or stand-up desks. They are good ideas, but not a single solution.

In reality, it’s not the posture and your legs, arms, and hands position that cause the problem, but the amount of time you remain in that position.

If you are working from home on a computer, you have unlimited flexibility: you can work sitting down, lying in bed or on a couch, standing up, and the most creative and athletic of us can even position themselves upside down 🙂 But, seriously…  Why limit yourself to one option?

Are you still only dreaming of working from home? Make your dream come true! Check out my “Reviews” on the top menu. Become a digital marketer and/ or position yourself in the CBD oil industry.

Working from home on a computer really doesn’t have to be a pain in the neck!

However, if you are already in persistent pain, whether caused by your work environment or by something else, I have a perfect natural solution for you. I tested it on myself (works like a charm!) and heard and read many amazing testimonials from other consumers. Follow this link to find out what it is.

Home Office Setup

Having an ergonomic workstation is very important for people who work in the office and must spend 40 hours per week at their desks. However, you can be more relaxed when choosing computer desks for a home office because you don’t have to limit yourself to one working place – your entire house or an apartment is in your possession. Why not move around with your laptop?

Please remember that in addition to having ergonomic office equipment, all medical professionals and ergonomists advise frequent breaks in your work for stretching, walking, and exercise.

Is it always possible in practice? Let’s say you are in the middle of a 3-hour task that requires your full concentration. If you get up and exercise every 45 minutes of your work, it’ll be a big disturbance: you’ll lose your line of thoughts, your focus, and inspiration. Afterward, it will take you another 15 minutes only to get back on track in your project.

Do you see yourself sitting in a correct position (as shown in the picture above) even for 45 minutes? I don’t. I’d curve my back, skew my shoulders, deform my neck… Wouldn’t you?

Wouldn’t it be a much shorter break and smoother transition if you simply change your position every 45 minutes? That’s the beauty of working from home — you can allow yourself to do this! Don’t forget that walking and exercise are still very important: do it as soon as you finished your high-concentration part of the project, or at least once during your workday.

Working from home on a computer doesn’t have to be a pain in the neck -- change your position every 45 minutes.

Here is my advice:

  1. Have your stationary home office desk that offers more working surface space than just for holding your laptop or monitor.
  2. Buy a mobile easily adjustable desk for your laptop, which you’d be able to move around your house.
  3. Get an in-bed laptop stand for work while lying in bed, or on a couch or sofa.

If you own all 3 pieces, you don’t have to worry too much about the science of ergonomics being fully implemented in your stationary desk. Use your old sedentary desk and if your chair is not very comfortable, buy a new one. If you need to buy a desk anyway, you may focus more on its price, size, how appealing and comfortable it feels for you, and how it fits the overall design of your house.

Table panel of this model is a swivel type. It tilts from 0° to 60° – so you can adjust it to the most ergonomic, comfortable working angle. This adjustable top panel features a safety edge-stopper to prevent objects from sliding off when tilted.

Model RTA-B005 Sit-to-Stand Mobile Laptop Cart offers an open storage compartment and a closed storage compartment with bottom hinges. The leg space in sitting position is limited – you’d need to convert to the standing height in order to stretch your legs.

Techni Mobili offers this model in two colors: Black and Chocolate, and they also have a very similar design in Graphite and Woodgrain finish. The links in this review will bring you to the page which has reference to the other model (RTA-B002) as well. I like the overall design of RTA-B005 a little better than RTA-B002 because it has a closed storage compartment and the tabletop can be tilted in this model. However, I want to warn you that the minimum height of this cart (30.75″ ) seems a bit high for a sitting position in a regular chair. If you choose this design, you may need to have an elevated chair. The RTA-B002 model’s height adjustment ranges from 27″ or 28″ (depending on the finish you choose) to 43″. 27″-28″ hight of a desk is more common for sitting position and can be used with almost any chair.

Measuring 21.75″ wide x 17″ deep, this mobile laptop cart is perfect for small spaces. It can easily fit through a standard doorway. This cart has 4 non-marking nylon casters, 2 of which include a locking mechanism.

The assembly of the cart is easy and straight-forward; all instructions and tools are included.

Overall, this is a very good value for the price. This mobile laptop cart is truly designed for functionality, comfort, and aesthetics.

  1. Thank you for this post on the various chairs that I can use. I have been seriously wanting to buy one and I was unsure about what to buy. It is as one of the images that you had used. I would just stay in whatever position that suited me but in the end, I would not end up getting the required amount of productivity that I am aiming for.

Maybe one of these will give me the benefit of comfort that I am looking for. Comfort is something that is one of the factors that is responsible for increased productivity or so I believe.

  2. I loved reading this and you are right. Moving around while you work must be the best option to avoid long term stress on various parts of your body.

I have also added a cushion to my computer chair to support my lower back as one forgets about posture when sitting for so long.  Do you have any other tips on how to maintain a good posture when not thinking about it?

Luckily I have two jobs. I am on my computer for a lot of the morning and then I stay active by teaching dancing all afternoon. So hopefully this balance helps in the long run.

    Reply
    • Hi Michel,

Adding a cushion for back support would definitely help if your chair doesn’t provide proper support. With a well-designed ergonomic chair, you shouldn’t be needing one.

People like yourself must be much safer as a posture of a dancer or an athlete is generally very good and the body has stronger muscle support. You’ve done your work at some time in your life to keep a strong and beautiful frame, and it comes naturally now.

I too work for many hours a day on a computer for over 20 years, last 10 of which – from home. 6 years ago, I added dancing to my life. I’m not a teacher, but a student and a social Argentine tango dancer. That definitely helps a lot!

The problem of long periods of sitting down still remains, though. Switching morning/evening types of activities, like you and I do, helps, but sitting down for many hours in a row is still not healthy. That’s why changing one’s position during the intellectual work is important, and working from home on a computer allows to do it easily and seamlessly as I explained in the post.

Thank you very much for sharing your story.

      Warm regards,

Excellent helpful article for those who work from home like me. Last year I have started my online business journey and definitely, I work from home most of the time sitting in front of the computer. And for this reason, I got back pain. So I was thinking maybe it is for a long time sitting on a chair. But after reading this post now I realized this problem ones, not from a long time I sit on a chair and work but it is the reason my chair and table hight, the position is not good. I think I need a perfect computer desk and an office chair which I am gonna checking from recommending items. Thanks a lot for this informative article.

Sorry to hear that you already got your back pain from sitting at the computer for too long. Try this exclusive 10x Pure CBD Oil for Pain Relief – it may help you a lot!

Actually, the point of my article was that pain is caused by remaining in the same position for too long and not so much by how comfortable or uncomfortable the position is. Of course, the ergonomic computer desk and chair promote good posture and delay discomfort and pain, but if you don’t move around and change your pose frequently, the pain will get you eventually.

  4. Very thorough review here, Julia.  You’re right about working at home in that you can roam around and adjust your position even when you’re in the middle of work — something you can’t do in the office with a nine to five.

I think what would be a good use for me at home is the BackPainHelp Posture Laptop Stand for Bed because it looks just what I need when I’m lying down.

I also like the Hbada Ergonomic High-Back Office Chair and it’s perhaps the best option to replace the chair I have at home.  I think with the Hbada, I can recline it during my breaks or whenever I feel uncomfortable from sitting too long.

    Thanks!

  5. I teach part time. And I write for my blog websites when I am not teaching, and at home. You have given me much to think about.

I had known about having the right working conditions, and the right equipment to do the work. This is so that we can maintain the right posture. And not get any ailments like pain in the neck or body. I do feel the occasional strain on my back, too.

I must admit. My work desk is not ideal. There is not enough space for me to be comfortable and work with the right posture, distance from the laptop and angle to the screen, etc. Plus my chair is not like the ones you recommend here. It is made of teak and hard with a stiff back and no support.

Yes, you have given me much to think about. I look at your recommendations, and I am planning to improve my work conditions with the items you recommended.

    Thank you so much.

    • Dear Timotheus,

It sounds like you do need a better home office setup. If you already feel the occasional strain on your back, it is only going to happen more often and get worse with time unless you change ergonomics of your office equipment. The good thing is that you are spending only a part of a day in your not-so-comfortable home office.

Since you mentioned that there is not much space around your desk, the portable laptop stand might and a smallish ergonomic mesh office chair could be a great solution for you. The stand could be used as a converter for your desk; it could be used on top of the desk to adjust your laptop/ computer monitor height and make it better aligned with your eyes level. The mesh chair that I chose here is cheaper than any other I could find, and yet, it’s made with decent quality. However, there are many similar models and of course, you can choose anything that fits your space and budget.

Thank you for reading, and I encourage you to make a change in your home office setup rather sooner than later.

I have the hardest time sitting still! Especially when I’m on my laptop, because I can be so mobile. While I’m working to be more focused and still, it’s fantastic to learn that moving around is beneficial! I feel encouraged! I’m thrilled to see really fantastic bed options. PS I’m typing this while laying on the floor with my laptop…ha ha! Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Gina,

Thank you very much for your lively and lovely comment. Well, I can’t promise that moving around is beneficial for concentration, but it certainly reduces a chance of a pain in the neck, 🙂 back and shoulders. Generally, moving around promotes greater productivity as your body does not get as tired as it would from sitting still for long hours. Lying on the floor with your laptop is one of the great options for your work from home… Haha! …as long as you don’t remain in that position for several hours in a row.

  7. Great post, Julia! I love the freedom of working from home, but I also need it to be a formal workspace too.
I love having my desk and a good chair. I picked up a chair very similar to the BestOffice chair you talked about here.
Another option is a stability ball. One of my friends is a competition bodybuilder and he taught me that one because it forces good posture. Sitting on the ball while I am working, I can’t lean back or contort my body in strange ways. I also stand up often when I am watching videos or taking online classes. I don’t take a break, I simply stand up and stretch, get the blood flowing back into my feet and legs. It really does help and doesn’t take me out of the project or task so I lose concentration.

I think this is where information about home office setup is especially helpful to your reader. Very nice job!

If you are a blogger, you probably spend mоrе than a third оf your еxiѕtеnсе аt a dеѕk chair, ѕо dо what you саn to mаkе sure you’re seating in a chair that iѕ not destroying your ѕрinе! Your suggestions on desk chairs are spot on. I really like the idea that you selected a mesh chair because I believe mesh chairs give excellent support to your spine.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING – don’t ѕtау in the same position for hours uроn hours! The best рlаn for prolonged ѕрinаl health iѕ to consistently alter your work environment – mоvе around, stand when possible, sit…just don’t ѕit in the same position fоr 8 straight hours! I think you covered this topic very well.

In short, this is an excellent review that gives the reader a way to work at the computer without risking back and neck pain. Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Thabo,

I am so glad to see you again on my blog! Thank you for commenting – I truly value your expert opinion.

I agree that mesh chairs are providing excellent support. I also like the fact that they are breathable. I wonder what you think about the kneeling chair.

      Warm regards,

  15. Great advice! I work on the computer often and find that I need to get up at least once an hour, maybe more!
Standing desks are great, or even a bar-level counter is a nice break.
The Dragonn chair looks very cool, I wonder if it would help strengthen the back and core?

    • Hi Maria,

Thank you very much for stopping by and for your comment.
That’s right, the bar-level countertop would serve the need of changing position. It doesn’t have to be a specially designed ergonomic stand desk if only you don’t remain working behind it for hours. You got my point: appropriate ergonomic furniture is nice and helpful, but not at all a necessity.

Products reviewed here are optional but could add some comfort or even a lot of comfort to your work setup. 🙂

The Dragonn chair is a cool piece. I think it should help strengthen the back… Even though the pressure on the spine is reduced in this kneeling position, back muscles are still working to keep the core straight. If you are looking for something to effectively strengthen your back, you could also consider the stability ball to sit on – see Erica’s (The Prepping Wife) comment.

      Warmly,

      ~ Julia
